LARNACA - A 58-year-old man who killed his partner by stabbing her through the chest with a screwdriver was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Monday.
The court found Antonis Kalogirou guilty of the manslaughter of Irene Andreou, 39, in a drunken argument in the flat they shared in Ayios Varnava Street in Larnaca.
On the night of the stabbing Kalogirou visited Larnaca Police Station and told officers that his partner had passed out in a drunken state.
The autopsy, however, revealed a 2cm in diameter puncture wound caused by a sharp object, possibly a screwdriver, under the victim’s left breast.
Forensic evidence also proved that the murder had taken place in another room of the flat than the one where the victim was found dead.
In delivering the sentence, the court said Kalogirou had shown a vicious and callous disregard for human life.
