 NICOSIA - A total of 838,897 residents were recorded in Cyprus in this year’s census, it was announced Thursday. According to the Statistical Service, the figure, on October 1, 2011, compared to 689,565 in the previous census in 2001, an increase of 21.7%.
Nicosia had 38.8% of the total population, Limassol had 28%, Larnaca 17.1%, Paphos 10.5% and Famagusta 5.5%.
The area with the largest population increase in 2011 compared to 2001 was Paphos with a growth rate 33.0%, followed by 24.4% in Larnaca, Famagusta at 23.1%, Limassol 19.6% and Nicosia 19.0%. Foreign nationals amount to 21.4% of the total population compared to 9.4%.in 2001.
Of 179,547 foreign nationals, 112,424 (62.6%) came from EU countries and the remaining 67,123 (37.4%) from third countries. Greece accounted for 31,044, the United Kingdom 26,659, Romania 24,376 and Bulgaria 19,197.
There were 9,744 from the Philippines, 8,663 from Russia , 7,350 from Sri Lanka and 7,102 from Vietnam.
