NICOSIA - The Turkish-occupied area of old Nicosia has been left riddled with dustbin bags and litter prompting a strong environmental reaction from both communities.
According to Turkish-Cypriot daily Kibris and under the headline "Ashamed", a strike by "municipality" workers in occupied Nicosia has left the streets littered with rubbish prompting fears of an outbreak of epidemic diseases and pests such as rats and cockroaches. The worst effect area according to reports is in and around the area of Saray square.
Workers claim that for months, their salaries were not be paid on time and that their social insurance payments are not deposited.
In recent statements to the same newspaper, Savas Bozat, chairman of the trade union of the employees in the "municipality" (BES), said that the employees are living in very difficult conditions and they have lost their faith in the "state". He added: "We will continue our action. We have not received the decision of the council of ministers in writing".
