ZAGREB – Marcos Baghdatis breezed into the third round of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors tournament on Thursday after beating Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-4, 6-2.
The Cypriot tennis star will now face either Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who is ranked 77th in the world or home favourite Ivan Dodig who is seeded fourth in the tournament.
Baghdatis – who caused a stir in his last game when he smashed four tennis racquets in an explosive one-minute outburst after suffering a second round exit at the Australian Open last month – had previously struggled to get past the Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol in the first round of the Croatian tournament but ran into little resistance against Kubot.
Baghdatis – ranked 45th in the ATP rankings – secured a total of six aces compared to Kubot’s three and never looked in trouble against his opponent.
Apart from the singles’ event, Baghdatis is also taking part in the doubles event where he will join forces with Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny ahead of their showdown against Julian Knowle of Austria and Germany’s Michael Kohlmann.
