NICOSIA - The European Commission has referred Cyprus to the European Court for operating two landfills in Nicosia and Limassol in defiance of EU law.
According to Article 14 of Council Directive 99/31/EC of the Council on landfill waste, landfills that were already in operation when the directive was incorporated in national law, could continue to operate until July 2009 but would then have to close. The two Cypriot sites in question are not expected to close until 2015 or 2016.
