NICOSIA – Omonia put themselves back in contention for a top four finish on Sunday after an encouraging 2-0 victory over title holders AEL in Nicosia.
Toni Savevski’s side are currently in fifth place, two points behind fourth place AEL who struggled to contain a determined Omonia at the GSP Stadium.
Omonia striker Demetris Christofi was in inspired form and he got things underway on 42 minutes when Andre Alves’ shot was only half parried by Matias Degra and the Cypriot international was on hand to pounce on the rebound.
Fellow strike partner Freddy made sure of the three points in the closing stages as he rifled in his side’s second to record his sixth goal of the season.
In the only other game on Sunday, Stephen Constantine’s Ethnikos Achnas secured a crucial 1-0 victory away to his former club Nea Salamina to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.
The league action continues on Monday with second place APOEL travelling to sixth-place Apollon while league leaders Anorthosis take on Alki – the same side who held them to a 1-1 draw in the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup third round first leg last week.
