AYIA NAPA - Yiannis Karousos was elected as the new mayor of Ayia Napa on Sunday after fending off his nearest rivals to win the top seat in the town.
Karousos, who is one of the island's youngest mayors at just 34, took in 1,131 of the votes while second closest Fotos Fotiou took in 862 votes and Andreas Ttofi Andreou secured 255.
Karousos replaces his relative Antonis Tsokkos who died suddenly of a heart attack last month forcing the municipality to hold an emergency round of elections. Karousos - a businessman by trade - has in the past served as adviser to the municipality while he also chairs a number of committees within the Famagusta district including youth and tourism councils. His grandfather, Stavros Tsokkos, served as community leader of Ayia Napa for 15 years while his father George Karousos has in the past acted as adviser to the then newly-founded municipality of Ayia Napa.
Karousos has already stated that he will enforce a 90-day plan which he claims aims to develop Ayia Napa's tourism influx and infrastructure. One of his plans includes properly regulating prices to ensure fair competition within the town.
