NICOSIA – President Anastasiades and Special Adviser of the UNSG for the Cyprus problem, Alexander Downer, will have their first meeting today after Anastasiades’ election in late February.
President Anastasiades returned to Cyprus last night after his official visit to Greece where he had separate meetings with the President of the Hellenic Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis, Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
Speaking last night at the European University in Nicosia, Downer referred to the meeting with President Anastasiades pointing out that he looks forward to hearing what Anastasiades has to say.
“There is hope. I wouldn`t do this job if I thought there was no hope. There is hope. I know it has taken a huge amount of time, everybody knows that. But there is hope, there is a possibility here. And let’s see how we go over the next few months,” Downer said.
The UN envoy will also have a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu later today.
