NICOSIA – APOEL’s title hopes took another downward turn on Sunday after Ivan Jovanovic’s side needed an injury time strike from Mario Sergio to snatch a 1-1 draw at home to relegation battlers Alki.
The Larnaca club had taken the lead through veteran striker Cafu but APOEL – without injured striker Aldo Adorno – struggled up front until Mario Sergio’s late intervention. The draw did little to soothe the frustrated home fans who once again showed their anger to Greek-Serbian boss Jovanovic after the final whistle.
Anorthosis – 3-0 winners against Doxa on Saturday – are now six points ahead of second place APOEL in the league title race.
Omonia’s hopes of clinching a top four place, meanwhile, were also stumped as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to third place AEK. Gorka Pintado scored a quick brace to give the Larnaca club the lead before Danielson scored later on for Omonia who had coach Toni Savevski sent to the stands in the second half.
Elsewhere, title holders AEL came from two goals behind to register a 3-2 win over neighbours Apollon in the local derby.
