LIMASSOL – The second round of the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup gets underway on Wednesday with APOEL’s trip to Limassol to face AEL being the pick of the day.
Ivan Jovanovic’s side are currently second in the league standings – six points behind leaders Anorthosis - but limp into the first leg at the Tsirio Stadium without a fully fit forward and having dropped two points against relegation battlers Alki last weekend.
The Nicosia club’s hopes of mounting a serious challenge both in the league and the Cup were boosted on Tuesday with the arrival of Danish striker Mikkel Beckmann from this season’s Champions League outfits Nordsjaelland.
Beckmann, 29, will not feature in Wednesday’s first leg and is also a doubt for APOEL’s trip to Limassol again this weekend to take on Apollon in the league.
Hosts AEL will take on an APOEL side in full confidence having come from two goals down to beat archrivals Apollon 3-2 last weekend and will be aiming to secure a good advantage ahead of the second leg in Nicosia which takes place on January 23rd.
In other games, Ronny Levy’s Anorthosis host Alki while third place AEK Larnaca are also at home as they take on Olympiakos Nicosia at the GSZ Stadium.
Omonia face a trick first leg trip to the Dasaki Stadium to take on Stephen Constantine’s Ethnikos Achnas, Enosis Neon Paralimniou are away to second division side Ermis, while there are also second division opponents for hosts Ayia Napa and AEP who take on Anagennises and PAEEK respectively.
The only other first leg tie between Nea Salamina and Apollon will take place on January 23rd.
